Mario Alcantara, MDDr. Alcantara received his Bachelors of Science degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 1995. He attended medical school at the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara in Guadalajara, Mexico. Dr. Alcantara earned his medical degree from the New York Medical College in 2002 and then went on to a year as General Surgery intern at Westchester Medical Center in New York. He completed his residency training in General Surgery at the Suma Health System in Ohio. After this, Dr. Alcantara chose to pursue specialized training in Colon and Rectal Surgery, and finished a “grueling and torturous” Fellowship at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa here in San Antonio, where he sub-specialized in laparoscopic surgery. His surgical interests include both inflammatory and infectious bowel disease, colon and rectal cancer, benign anal disease, and minimally invasive surgery. Defecatory physiology and anorectal unltrasound are also among his interests. Dr. Alcantara was born and raised in South Texas. He is married to a Family Practice Physician who also practices in the Westover Hills area, and together they enjoy raising their young daughters.
